Update: Valve has patched the R8 so that it deals less damage. Until then, jump on the train and get as many insta-kills as you can, I guess. Some players have complained that CS:GO doesn’t have a beta testing server where new guns like this could be tested out by the general public, because clearly the R8 should have never made it live if it performed in player testing like it is now. I doubt that R8 will be able to last long in its current form, and Valve has to be testing more tweaks as we speak, or possibly even debating shelving the gun and bringing it back when there’s more time to fix it. But it’s hard not to watch game after game of players using the R8 and snapping of 3-5 one-hit kills in under a minute and think there isn’t some kind of serious problem there. Sometimes in competitive games, something is introduced that seems overpowered, but eventually the community simply learns to play counter to it, so whatever was introduced isn’t actually as godly as it first appears. Valve has just patched the ability to hold back the hammer of the gun indefinitely, but that still might not be enough to tame the beast. Many are calling for it to be removed altogether. The problem with the R8 is that most players believe that tweaking much about the gun would take it from overpowered to useless in a heartbeat. "With having the patch land very close to the event (and players already being onsite), we don't think it would be reasonable to expect players to have enough preparation, so we are rolling back." "With the number of game play changes and weapon changes, we all felt that this is really important to maintain the competitive spirit of the event given the amount of money and prestige on the line," ESL vice president James Lampton said. The ESL season two finals are this weekend, and the R8 has made such an impact, the event organizers have decided not to play the newly patched version of the game, instead sticking with a simpler time before the R8 existed, even if it isn’t specifically mentioned in the ESL’s statement:
